The slope that matters more than the appearance
A settled patio is usually reported as a cosmetic annoyance — furniture rocks, water stands in a corner after rain. The more consequential problem is direction. Patios and pool decks are poured against the house and should shed water away from it. When they settle, they almost always settle toward the foundation, because the backfill nearest the wall is the most compressible ground under the slab.
That reversed slope delivers roof runoff and rainfall directly against the foundation wall, repeatedly, for years. In a climate where the frost line runs several feet down, saturated soil against a wall is also soil that expands when it freezes. Correcting the pitch is inexpensive preventive work measured against what chronic saturation costs a basement.
Pool decks specifically
Deck settlement around an in-ground pool is nearly always a base problem rather than a concrete problem. Pool construction involves substantial excavation and backfill, and the ring of ground immediately around the shell consolidates for years afterward. Add the water that inevitably ends up on a pool deck and the fines migrate.
Two details make pool-deck work different from ordinary patio lifting. First, weight matters more: adding heavy material immediately beside a pool shell is not automatically desirable, which is why polyurethane foam is often the better recommendation here. Second, deck sections frequently sit hard against coping and tile, so the lift has to be controlled section by section rather than run as one continuous pour of material underneath.
Stamped and decorative surfaces
Decorative concrete raises a legitimate concern about visible repair. Injection ports are the only marks left, and on a stamped or coloured surface those are placed in joint lines and pattern grout where practical, then patched to match. Foam's smaller ports are a meaningful advantage on these surfaces — it is the main reason we recommend it on decorative work even where slurry would be cheaper.
What lifting cannot do is restore a surface that has already failed. If a stamped patio has lost its colour hardener or the sealer has broken down and the surface is flaking, raising it produces a level patio that still needs resurfacing. Level first, finish second — but know both are on the list before you start.
