What actually moves the price here
The number is driven by how much material it takes to fill the space under your slab. In Milwaukee that space is usually one of two things, and they price very differently.
Compression voids are what you get over lakebed clay and old grading — the soil is still there, it has just consolidated under decades of load, leaving an inch or two of gap. These are predictable and usually land in the lower half of the ranges above.
Washout voids are the expensive ones. When a downspout, a failed lateral, or a bad grade routes water under a slab every spring, it carries fines out with it and hollows a cavity that can be far larger than the visible drop suggests. A driveway that looks two inches low can be hiding a cavity several times the volume you would guess from the surface. That is why two identical-looking drives quote differently, and why anyone pricing your job from a photo is guessing.
Other real factors: the number of separate sections that moved, whether equipment can reach the slab or has to run hose around a house, slab thickness and general condition, and whether the joints get sealed afterward — they should, because open joints are how the water got under there in the first place.
Leveling vs. replacement: the honest math
Tearing out and repouring a two-car driveway in this market typically runs several times the cost of lifting the existing slab, plus a week before you can park on it, plus new concrete that will never match the rest of your flatwork. Leveling generally runs a third to half of replacement, takes a few hours, and is usable the same day.
Replacement genuinely wins in one case: when the slab itself is failing — crumbling, spalled through, cracked into rubble, or so thin it will not survive a lift. A slab has to be structurally sound to be raised, because lifting works by floating the concrete on the material pumped beneath it. If yours is past saving we will say so at the estimate rather than take the job.
One Milwaukee-specific note: on older properties, tear-out sometimes means discovering that the original slab was poured over cinder or ash fill from the neighborhood's industrial era. Replacement crews have to excavate and re-compact that; a lift works with it.
