A hundred feet of concrete rarely settles evenly — it drops where the base was weakest, usually where the drive crosses a swale, a trench line, or an area that was filled during site prep. Detached garages, shops and outbuildings are more common here than in the tighter suburbs, and their slabs frequently sit on less-engineered base than a house does. Those floors and their approach aprons are routine lift work — and much cheaper to raise than to demolish and repour, particularly when the building is sitting on top of them.
